Landvik Leaves ‘Em Laughing

I went to the Northfield Arts Guild on Friday night expecting a good time all right but, wow, I haven’t laughed that hard since the demise of Edgar Allan Poe.

Lorna Landvik, the award-winning author of numerous books, and a keen observer of life here in Min-uh-soda, entertained about 100 people as part of the Northfield Reads! communitywide book club event at the NAG. Landvik read from the selected book — Oh My Stars — talked about life in God’s state, reflected on her life and career, shared nuggets from the literary life, and pretty much brought the house down with one liners that would have made me slap my knee if, in fact, I had one.

Among the stories shared, was, of all things, a dream Landvik once had in which she was suddenly made Gorbachev’s temporary secretary. “I wasn’t just a temp,” Landvik explained to the crowd, “I was from … Minnesota!” Perhaps my favorite line came when Landvik explained what it was like to be part of a peace march for global disarmament 20 years ago. “There has been no nuclear war,” she said, “so you’re welcome.”

But, hey, no use me telling you about the hilarity. Check it out for yourself by clicking on the link for full audio from the event.
