Something for the Weekend Anyway

saturday.JPG.jpgIt’s Sunday so, naturally, I have decided to scribble a few words about Saturday. Hey, one way other another, it’s still the weekend. Cut me some slack!

Sunday … wait, where was I? … oh, yeah, Saturday is not just a good day to mow the lawn, it's also the title of a great book. I read it a year or so ago — soon after it was published in hardcover. The book was recently published in paperback, which booklovers know means it’s cheaper ($14.95 in this case) and easier to throw in your bag on the way to the pool (or birdbath).

The best feature of this particular paperback, though, is the writing. Ian McEwan, bestselling author of Atonement and other acclaimed novels, is a gifted storyteller. This tale follows an ordinary man through a Saturday whose high promise gradually turns nightmarish.

Henry Perowne — a neurosurgeon, urbane, privileged, deeply in love with his wife and grown-up children — plans to play a game of squash, visit his elderly mother, and cook dinner for his family. But after a minor traffic accident leads to an unsettling confrontation, Perowne is forced to set aside his plans and summon a strength greater than he knew he had.

Of this book, The New York Times Book Review says it’s “finely wrought and shimmering with intelligence.”

See, I have a thing for books that shimmer. Just thought maybe you do, too.
