Fiction Club Goes Old School

In my effort to keep up with the River City Books fiction book club, I should note that the group met on Tuesday night and announced that it has selected a classic for its August meeting — My Antonia by Willa Cather.
Cather (1873-1947), the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of more than 15 books, was one of the most distinguished American writers of the early 20th century.

From the book’s inside cover: “In this powerful and astonishing novel, Willa Cather created one of the most winning yet thoroughly convincing heroines in American fiction. Antonia Shimerda, the daughter of Bohemian immigrants, not only survives her father’s suicide, poverty, and a failed romance, she triumphs with high spirits.”

The fiction book club’s next meeting will be at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 1.
