Gift Idea of the Week: Literary Soup

soup-for-you.jpgWhen gift-giving, folks often think in terms of buying a single item. I know it’s what I often do in my absent-minded ways. But it doesn’t have to be so! One can package smaller items to create a single gift of meaning and quality that recipients will remember for the rest of their lives.

OK, so maybe that’s shooting a little high. Most of us are just glad when we come up with a passable idea. This week’s Gift Idea of the Week is that and, I hope, then some. Here’s what you do: Buy breads or packets of beans and mixes, and combine them with a book of culinary delights, such as Kafka’s Soup: A Complete History of World Literature in 14 Recipes by Mark Crick, a witty presentation of recipes written in the voices of famous writers, from Homer to Virginia Woolf to Irvine Welsh.

Tell me a book lover in your life (who also happens to eat) wouldn’t find that clever …
