Young Adult Book Club Gathers Tonight

uglies.jpgIf you must, write it on a Post-It note and stick it to your forehead (hey, it’s what I must resort to sometimes). Just remember that the River City Books young adult book club meets tonight. Time: 7 p.m. Location: RCB’s cozy downstairs meeting area. Admission: Free. Stimulating conversation: priceless.

The book to be read is Uglies by Scott Westerfeld, a very popular title among young adult sect these days, and one I highly recommend. Tally is about to turn sixteen, and she can’t wait. Not for her license — for turning pretty. In Tally’s world, your sixteenth birthday brings an operation that turns you from a repellent ugly into a stunningly attractive pretty and catapults you into a high-tech paradise where your only job is to have a really great time. In just a few weeks Tally will be there. But Tally’s new friend Shay isn’t sure she wants to be pretty. She’d rather risk life on the outside. When Shay runs away, Tally learns about a whole new side of the pretty world — and it isn’t, well, very pretty.

If I haven’t already mentioned this, the young adult book club’s meetings are open to the public. You’re welcome even if you haven’t been to a past meeting or haven’t read the book — there aren’t quizzes, just treats for those who participate. Members of the club receive 20 percent off selected titles.

For more information about the young adult club contact River City bookseller and club moderator Katie Goetz at or 507-646-7754.
