Like the Book, Author Makes Readers Smile

friend3.JPGI was fortunate enough to be among those who made it down to River City Books on Monday night for a reading and book signing by Catherine Friend, author of Hit by a Farm: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Barn, and I can confirm something readers of this book may have wondered about: Yes, in fact she is as funny in person.

friend1.JPGFriend read from her book and spoke in RCB’s downstairs meeting area for about a half hour — and fielded questions from admiring readers for about another half hour. Of course, she signed every book on hand. It seems most had already read the book, but many wanted an extra copy to give as a gift. “Hit by a Farm” is one of those books that people tend to want to share with others.

friend2.JPGMore than most readings I’ve been to, those on hand were really excited to talk to Friend and ask her questions (see the included photographs, shot by yours truly — so be kind). As entertaining as Friend was at speaking about the book, the conversation afterward was just as enjoyable. I was especially appreciative of her remarks about the writing process, bringing this book to publication, her further tales of farming life, and how she’s come to love living in small-town Minnesota.

Turns out, too, Friend is a kindred spirit of mine — that is, she’s a blogger. Check it out!
