A Cool Treat to Read

blizzard.jpgIt’s been awhile — my apologies — since I rummaged through River City Books’ bargain tables and picked out a winner. I have two excuses for this negligent behavior. The first is that it’s awfully agonizing trying to pick just one title to spotlight when there are so many good choices. The second is that I’m a lazy son of a bird.

Alas, I have done my duty and found a title I think you’re going want to warm up to — The Children’s Blizzard by David Laskin.

A short summary of the book: Thousands of impoverished Northern European immigrants were promised that the prairie offered “land, freedom, and hope.” The disastrous blizzard of 1888 revealed that their free homestead was not a paradise but a hard, unforgiving place governed by natural forces they neither understood nor controlled, and America’s heartland would never be the same.

Right now at River City Books they have this paperback on sale for just $5.95.

Hey, there may be no better time to read about a blizzard in Minnesota than right now, in the midst of the three-month stretch when snow is not possible.
