A Pick With Dad In Mind

book-sense.gifContinuing right along with the housecleaning theme … which reminds me, the nest could use a good sweeping … it’s been a spell since I reminded you to take a gander at the Book Sense list. And, as many of you are hunting for reading material to take to the cabin or to the beach, there’s no better place to find great recommendations. Recall, this is not a straight bestseller list. It’s a series of terrific reads, picked monthly by independent booksellers.

Of course, you might not be shopping for yourself at the moment. Dad, after all, is having his day pretty soon (one day, that’s all, then you can let him click the remote in peace) and, with that in mind, I picked a June title that honest fathers will likely love — Land of Lincoln by Andrew Ferguson.

abe.jpgA brief synopsis: Like many sons of Illinois before him, Ferguson hung photos of Abe on his bedroom wall, memorized the Gettysburg Address and read himself to sleep at night with Lincoln’s speeches. In Land of Lincoln — on sale for 20 percent off — Ferguson embarks on a curiosity-fueled coast-to-coast journey through contemporary Lincoln Nation, encountering everything from hatred to adoration to opportunism and all manner of reaction in between.

Now here’s what Book Sense says: “With grace, insight, and great good humor, Ferguson travels the blue highways to discover the stories behind our fascination with the 16th president. During the course of the journey, readers come to know a Lincoln who was an icon, an enigma, an intimate, and an enemy. And it is a journey well worth taking, honest!” -Joe Drabyak, Chester County Book & Music Company, West Chester, Penn.
