Deciding to Read This One is No ‘Dilemma’

dilemma.jpgAs even a bird brain like me knows, The Omnivore’s Dilemma has been a mega bestseller for a long time now. This is not news. What is news is that this book, which has changed the way readers view the ecology of eating, is now in paperback. (Proof: Click on this side-action photo I took while in the neighborhood bookstore the other day.)

“The Omnivore’s Dilemma” is a revolutionary book by award winner Michael Pollan that asks a seemingly simple question: What should we have for dinner? Tracing from source to table each of the food chains that sustain us — whether industrial or organic, alternative or processed — he develops a portrait of the American way of eating. The result is a surprising exploration of the hungers that have shaped our evolution, and of the implications our food choices have for the health of our species and the future of our planet.

Said the Washington Post: “An eater’s manifesto … [Pollan’s] cause is just, his thinking is clear, and his writing is compelling. Be careful of your dinner!”

Not only is this book worth reading on its own, but the timing is good as it would make a great compliment to Gary Holthaus’ book, which will be discussed later this month in Northfield during a River City Books-sponsored event.
