An Evening for ‘The Night Birds’

maltman.JPGAs I’ve mentioned a time or two before, there’s a pretty amazing event this Wednesday night for a great new book.

For one thing, this book has the word “birds” in the title and it stars a pair of ravens. You have to like it already, don’t you?

If that was not enough, there is also an appearance by James-Younger gang (just before the attempted — failed! — raid in Northfield). So there’s the local tie.

And the reviews — even by writers who don’t fly — are nearly all raves. “Maltman’s prose and pacing flow from an expert hand. His gaze is unflinching and balanced,” said the Denver Post. Publisher’s Weekly, in its starred review, called Maltman’s debut novel “superb.”

In other words, the odds of me being there are about the same as the odds of pumpkins remaining the color orange. You should also be a lock to attend. This is going to be a fun night.

Here are the rest of the important details: Thomas Maltman, author of the recently published and critically acclaimed The Night Birds, will read from and sign copies of his book at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 10, at River City Books. The event is free. If you can’t make it but would like a signed copy, contact the store. “The Night Birds” is on sale for 15 percent off through the event.
