How To Use That Gift Card

five-pack.jpgThis time of year people are often walking into the neighborhood bookstore with plastic to burn. No, I don’t mean VISA or MasterCard. I am talking about the best present I ever received: a gift card from River City Books.

If you happen to be fulfilling the dream of every reader — to stroll into a store and be able to shop for free — here are some great books to consider (click on the pic to enlarge):

The Nine: Inside the Secret World of the Supreme Court
by Jeffrey Toobin.

Comment: This book landed on every best nonfiction top ten list in 2007. Toobin’s a terrific writer and his insights about Gore v. Bush are well worth reading.

Bridge of Sighs by Richard Russo.

Comment: The Pulitzer Prize winning writer of Empire Falls is not holding his breath. This latest effort is selling like hot waffles on a winter day.

Schulz and Peanuts by David Michaelis.

Comment: We have long known about the magic of fellow Minnesotan Charles Schulz’s characters. This book tells the interesting story behind their creation — and the genius who brought them to life.

The Looming Tower by Lawrence Wright.

Comment: This important book — available in paperback — received more accolades than Tom Hanks at an awards show.

Our Dumb World by The Onion.

Comment: When it comes to printed fake news, if you’re not reading The Onion, you’re missing a lot — of laughs, that is.
