Food, Glorious Food!

defense-of-food.jpgNorthfield is a place, and this makes me happy to say, that cares about its food. That is obvious in many ways, including the fact that our small town has a terrific, thriving food co-op. Proof is also found down at River City Books as in recent months several local bestsellers — including The Omnivore’s Dilemma, Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, and From the Farm to the Table — have been on the topic of the food we eat.

Well, there’s another new book out for folks who care about what they put into their bodies: In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto by Michael Pollan. This book, which has been getting a lot of publicity, argues that the traditional American diet that relied on whole foods has been displaced by one that stresses highly processed foods of dubious nutritional value. “In Defense of Food” is essentially a long answer to the many questions posed to Pollan by readers since the release of his national bestseller “The Omnivore’s Dilemma.”

By the way, I happened to notice that Pollan will be on Book TV multiple times this weekend.
